Cal Clutterbuck Update – 1-24-2013 – ClutterPuck on Clutterbuck

Cal Clutterbuck Bringing the Clutter like only he can!!!

The National Hockey League is back and that means we get to see Cal Clutterbuck again! We get to see him play the physical game that has become his signature and be a pest to every opponent the Minnesota Wild matchup against. That will only consist of Western Conference opponents during the regular season thanks to a lockout that wiped out the 2012 part of the 2012-13 season and results in a shortened 48-game schedule. Get used to seeing opponents on their asses after watching their passes! Here comes the CALvary!!! Bring the Clutter, Cal!!!

Here’s what’s been going on in the life of Cal!:
Mr. Mom heads back to arena – FortErieTimes.ca – Bernie Puchalski – 1/6/2013

  • Cal Clutterbuck was happy having time to spend with his newborn baby because he got to see her grow up in a way he normally wouldn’t be able to but how he’s ““…pretty excited. I’m disappointed that it took so long but, at this point, we have to try and focus on what’s ahead of us. It will be 10 years of not having to deal with this any more.”

Has Cal Clutterbuck become expendable? – TheHockeyWriters.com – 1/14/2013

  • BLASPHEMY! Why would anyone think like that? Expendable? Come on, now!
    • Seriously, though, I understand there is a chance the Wild could use Clutterbuck to trade for a defenseman being a restricted free agent at the end of the season but expendable is not the right word!
    • Quote from the article – “Clutterbuck is one of those guys you just love to watch; he’s consistently among the league leaders in hits, is a guy that can quickly get under the skin of his opponents and can also score goals, especially shorthanded. The man who, according to Don Cherry, has “the prototypical hockey player name” is a guy that would fetch considerable trade value for Minnesota because 29 other teams are looking for a guy like him.”
      • Does that sound like expendable? How ’bout valuable? Indispensable? Clutterrific? Yeah…CLUTTERRIFIC!
      • If 29 other teams are looking for a guy like him, then why would you trade him?
        • There’s not a lot of players out there who do what Cal does as well as he does it. IT IS BRING THE CLUTTER!!!
    • Plus…what would I call this blog then? ParisePuck? SuterPuck? (Hey…that’s not too bad! Wait! NO!) WildPuck? Oooooh, how ’bout PuckOfMikko? Alright, we’re getting off course here!

Wild’s Cal Clutterbuck gets some ink – TwinCities.com – Pioneer Press – Charley Walters – 1/15/2013

  • This is in the article too: Word is the Philadelphia Flyers see Gophers 6-5, 205-pound defenseman Mark Alt, whose rights they traded for this week, as a physical prospect in the mold of Flyers captain Chris Pronger.
    • Uhh…..WOW!

Mitchell, Wild’s other early-summer signee, no longer an afterthought – StarTribune.com – Michael Russo – 1/18/2013

  • Forward Cal Clutterbuck was honored by a local gay-rights advocacy group for his work to improve the school environment for gay students, and especially gay athletes. He received the “outstanding ally award” from Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), during its conference at Hamline University.

Russo’s NHL Insider: Clutterbuck glad union players ‘stuck together’ – StarTribune.com – 1/19/2013

  • “It was really important. Every single aspect of the collective bargaining agreement affects a player a different way. It was important that players that were making a lot of money were standing behind the guys that may be in a bind in a year or two.”

There’s a nice picture from the Minnesota Wild game on January 20th against Dallas of Cal doing what he does best from the DailyAstorian.com:Cal Clutterbuck Bringing the Clutter on Stephane Robidas! Clutter Brought! DailyAstorian.com

Some other articles involving the Minnesota Wild:
Nobody should view Koivu as Wild’s third wheel – StarTribune.com – Chip Scoggins – 1/18/2013

  • Smart hockey people say the beauty of Koivu’s game is in the details. The way he works and controls a game and is wedded to defense. They applaud his consistent approach and ability to make those around him better. That’s not always sexy, but his game is so fundamentally understated that it’s easy to take his contributions for granted.
  • “I have a whole new appreciation for how good he really is,” Parise said. “I was kind of taken aback a little bit. No disrespect because I always knew he was a good player. But you don’t know until you’re with him.”

Homeland has Wild rookie Granlund well-covered – StarTribune.com – Michael Russo – 1/21/2013

  • Samuel Savolainen, a hockey writer for the magazine Urheilulehti, has moved to St. Paul to cover Granlund and the Wild full-time. Saturday’s game was televised live on Nelonen Sport Pro at 4 a.m. Finland time, and Finns who got up early enough saw him score his first goal in the second period, giving the Wild a 2-1 lead.
    • Is there any wonder why fans are so excited to see Mikael Granlund in a Wild uniform? It will be fun to see him progress through his first NHL season.
    • The Xcel Energy could be known as GranLand if the “mania” continues – #WelcomeToGranland

Mikael Granlund scored his 1st goal in the NHL last night! #GRANLUND #WelcomeToGRANLAND #JustTheBeginningfb.me/1M6SpD1WM

National Hockey League UNLOCKED – Now how should they get fans back?

With the NHL Lockout finally over, what will the National Hockey League do to bring back the fans? What will the league and the owners come up with that will bring back the most loyal fans in professional sports* and make them forget about 4 months of no professional hockey because of two sides arguing over millions? Will they need to do much at all? Will some fans continue a boycott of the NHL once the season begins? Has the NHL lost some fans forever because of another lengthy lockout?

*Are we really the most loyal fans in professional sports? Are we a little biased? I know I am! A question to be answered at another time!

Damage of a 113-day, 4-month NHL lockout
Has the National Hockey League done irreparable damage to its fans with a lockout that lasted almost 4 months? For some fans, the answer to that question is yes. Some fans have moved on and found other ways to spend their money and might never come back to the NHL. Other fans will not watch for awhile in an attempt to show the NHL that without the fans, there is no league.

When you think of all the ways the National Hockey League and each of its teams make money, there’s a lot of ways fans can rebel if they so choose. The obvious ways are by not buying tickets to games, not buying food at the games, not buying merchandise and not watching games on TV or online. However, there are other ways fans can affect the NHL’s revenue. They can choose to not buy from any or all of the companies that advertise with the NHL. They can refrain from going to any NHL related websites and from wearing any NHL related garb. They can just keep enjoying all of the other hockey they’ve been enjoying throughout the lockout and, most of all, keep getting out on the ice and playing some hockey themselves.

The fans can do any or all of those things to boycott the National Hockey League but my question is this – if you love hockey, how can you keep from watching the best players in the world play the game you love? I know I won’t be able to.

How can the NHL bring fans back?
What can the National Hockey League do to get the fans to come back to the arenas and support the sport and their favorite teams?

There’s the obvious ways of giving the fans free tickets or discounts on merchandise but that’s too easy. They could give discounts on and improve GameCenter Live and NHL Center Ice but they need to do more than that.

The NHL should give the fans unprecedented coverage and access to the National Hockey League. That could, should and would include what happens in the locker room, on the bench, on the ice, during practice and games, during intermission with coaches between periods with what adjustments are being made, off the ice training to see what the players do to get better, on road trips to see how they spend their time on the way to other cities, what they do in other cities on days off and on and on. Team reporters should have less restrictions on how they cover the team.

As Wild fans, the Becoming Wild series has gone over quite well as the fans get to see the behind the scenes of a hockey team and the players lives. It’s very similar to HBO’s 24/7 series* that leads up to the Winter Classic. A team should be covered every week or so and eventually, every team in the span of a couple seasons would get that kind of exposure to the fans. Unfortunately, with the length of the lockout (Damn you, lockout!), there’s only 15 weeks from January 19th to the end of April, there’s not enough time to cover every team in a shortened season unless it was for one game but even that would be a start! That kind of exposure to the fans would help get fans back and get even more fans excited about the National Hockey League.

*Would HBO be interested or even be able to air something like that? or could it be done by the same group that does the NHL36 series that started last season and aired on NHL Network?

Each team will no doubt have their own campaigns to get the fans back so hopefully we will see some interesting things to gain more interest in the sport of hockey and the NHL product. It might be hard to expect a lot of player appearances and events in a shortened season because they will be playing at least 3 games a week.

It will definitely be interesting to see what the National Hockey League and each of its teams do to convince the fans to come back.

Some other stories about the NHL Lockout:

Some teams have begun their “come back” endeavors:

Do you have any ideas on what the NHL and/or each team can do to get the fans back into the stands and loving the NHL again?

Gopher Hockey Notes – vs Notre Dame Irish – 1-7-2013

The Gopher Hockey team is ranked #1 in the nation!!! Their first matchup as the #1 team is with the 2nd-ranked team in the nation in the Notre Dame Irish and the Son of Don, Mario Lucia, among others. After dominating the former #1 team Boston College Eagles in an 8-1 win back on December 30th, the Minnesota Gophers can’t let up as every opponent from here on will bring their best game to try to beat them and the Irish has plenty of talent and team to win! They’re not ranked 2nd in the nation for nothing.

With Erik Haula out with a wrist injury, Christian Isackson moves up to RW on the #1 line and Nate Condon moves down to center the 2nd line. That opens up a spot for AJ Michaelson to get in the lineup centering the 4th line between GOLD MEDAL WINNER Mike Reilly & Justin Holl.

Let’s DROP THE CLUTTERPUCK!!!

1st Period

  • GOAL! – Nate Condon from Zach Budish & Sam Warning at 1:21 of the 1st period – Sam Warning gets a loose puck along the left boards off a puck battle is won by Jake Parenteau knocking it away from T.J. Tynan. Warning quickly turns and heads up ice then makes a pass to the center of the Gopher blue line to Zach Budish. Budish carries the puck through the neutral zone and once he gets over the Irish blue line, he drops the puck to Nate Condon, and drives the net. Condon was right behind Budish then skated to the right of the zone getting the pass as he crossed the blue line, he skated to the top of the right circle and sent a snap shot to the upper left corner of the net past a screened Steven Summerhays in goal. GOPHERS 1-0!!!
    • Too much time and space given to Budish and Condon by Irish defenseman Kevin Lind and Robbie Russo. One of them needs to force Budish to make a play before the blue line and not just let him skate into their zone freely.
      • Russo turns and skates towards Budish but not enough to make him move the puck or dump it in or do anything he doesn’t want to.
      • Once Lind sees Russo coming towards Budish, he should step up and make a play on the puck or attempt a check on Budish.
      • Russo stays on Budish and when he sees Condon preparing to shoot, he gets out of the way (to not screen his goalie) but he doesn’t get in front of the shot or at least get in front of part of the net to block the shot from getting through.
      • Lind attempts to block the shot with the old put my legs together and hold my stick like a goaltender which only gives Condon a better lane to shoot the puck through!
    • Use the blue line as another defender! That is your “line” of defense!
    • Offensive players want time and space! That gives them the chance to handle the puck and/or find an open man for a pass. Why would you want to give them that chance?
  • PENALTY – Peter Schneider for Boarding on Seth Ambroz at 5:13 of the 1st period – A loose puck comes to Seth Ambroz at the right half wall of the Gopher zone and Peter Schneider puts his arm into Ambroz’ back and gets two minutes for it!
  • GOAL! – Sam Warning from Travis Boyd & Ben Marshall at 7:29 of the 1st period – After the penalty expires, Ben Marshall gets the puck at the point and just dumps the puck wide left of the net where Seth Ambroz is the first to it and passes it to Travis Boyd at the left half-wall. Boyd skates the puck towards the net and makes a backhand pass back to Ben Marshall for a one-time slapper that goes off Steven Summerhays right pad & rebounds right to Boyd. He tries to make a move around Summerhays but trips over his pads and a mad scramble for the puck ensues in front of Steven Summerhays that includes all 5 Irish players and 3 Gopher players. Boyd is down on the ice, Ambroz is knocked down, loses his stick (which is flung in the air by Tynan) and the puck comes loose to Shayne Taker. Taker tries to make a move around Sam Warning but Sam gets his stick in the way enough to steal the puck and shoots it into the upper left of the net. GOPHERS 2-0!!!
    • Hard to believe one Gopher player basically beat out 5 Irish players for the puck in that situation.
      • No way that should happen! GET THE PUCK and GET IT OUT!!!
    • If you get the puck in that situation, just get it out of the zone or throw it in the corner. Don’t try to make a move! Or at least don’t make a move that takes the puck toward the opposing player.
  • PENALTY – T.J. Tynan for Hooking on Jake Parenteau at 9:56 of the 1st period – T.J. Tynan gets a little too aggressive on the forecheck (or back check) and puts his stick in front of Parenteau and holds him up enough for the official to call him for a penalty.
  • PENALTY – Sam Warning for Interference on Austin Wuthrich at 12:14 of the 1st period – Sam Warning is skating through the neutral zone and Austin Wuthrich is back checking and they run into each other. Wuthrich falls down so the official gets Warning for the penalty.
    • Not sure that wasn’t just incidental contact as Warning just kept skating. He didn’t change direction to get in Wuthrich’s way and it appeared as if Wuthrich was trying to jump to get around Warning.
  • GOAL! – Jeff Costello from Bryan Rust & Anders Lee at 14:31 of the 1st period – After the Gophers clear the zone, Stephen Johns flips the puck out to the center of the neutral zone. Anders Lee catches the puck and drops it to the ice and he swings at it to pass it to the left to Bryan Rust. He skates it into the center of the zone, tries to stick-handle to his forehand but the puck gets away from him and rolls/bounces to the right of the zone through Seth Helgeson, who can’t get enough of it to deflect it, to Jeff Costello and he’s able to get it on his stick and now has the speed to get around Helgeson and cut to the net, make a move to his forehand and get the puck on Adam Wilcox. The puck somehow gets through Wilcox and slowly goes across the goal line! IRISH 1-2!!!
    • Could that have been a hand pass by Anders Lee or did he actually get a piece of it when he swung at it? He may of barely got a piece of it.
    • When the puck gets through Helgeson, he panics and turns from skating backwards to forwards and reaches for the puck instead of just angling Costello off and forcing him to go behind the net or to make a pass.
      • Also, he reaches instead of moving his feet and goes for the puck instead of taking the body.
        • KEEP SKATING! You will always be in better position to make a play! If you reach and miss, you’re usually out of the play!
        • Take the body! It’s a much bigger target.
    • Sam Warning and Seth Ambroz weren’t in the greatest position to break up that play with both of them going for the puck in the same area of the ice.
    • The craziest thing about that play may be that the puck may have never been flat on the ice, always rolling or bouncing on edge!
      • The puck flipped to Anders Lee
      • Dropped to the ice, bounces to Bryan Rust
      • Rolls through Helgeson
      • Is on edge the whole time Costello has it on his stick and
      • somehow gets through Wilcox and
      • I’m wrong, it was flat when it slid across the goal line!
  • PENALTY – Nate Condon for Holding on Jeff Costello at 16:54 of the 1st period – Nate Condon loses the puck as he tries to get around the Irish defense and, in frustration, grabs Jeff Costello and hauls him down and now he gets to think about it for a couple minutes in the sin bin!
    • Never a good penalty in the offensive zone!

2nd Period

  • PENALTY – Nick Larson for Tripping on AJ Michaelson at 3:06 of the 2nd period – Nick Larson is in front of the Gopher net and a shot comes in from the point from Sam Calabrese. AJ Michaelson gets in front of the shot, catches the puck and as he drops it to the ice, Larson trips him up and gets the call for tripping from the official.
    • Bad penalty in the offensive zone but maybe a little bad luck that Michaelson fell down there.
  • GOAL! – Christian Isackson from AJ Michaelson at 5:23 of the 2nd period – After the penalty expires, Travis Boyd just dumps the puck in right of the Irish zone (to Summerhays left) with Sam Warning in on the forecheck. Shayne Taker coasts to the puck and plays the puck around the right boards to Stephen Johns. Johns taps the puck back around the back boards but a little farther than he may have wanted to creating a loose puck for a second and enough time for AJ Michaelson to pressure him and force a turnover as they get past the net. Christian Isackson gets the puck and has enough time all alone in front of the net to fake a move to his forehand, move it back to his backhand and go Backhand Shelf with it for the goal! GOPHERS 3-1!!!
    • AJ Michaelson got his skate on the puck and may have kicked it in the direction of Isackson. Nice play if he did that on purpose. Heck! Nice play even if it was just a good bounce.
      • Always a good play to force the d-man to make a quicker play than he wants to. That forces mistakes as most defenseman don’t have the calm to make the smart play every time.
    • Tough to fault anyone for being out of position as the Irish are preparing to break out of the zone and then the puck is turned over.
    • You could say have a little more sense of urgency from the defense. Get the puck, make a quick play and force the opposition to work harder to defend you!
      • By coasting and playing lackadaisical, the Irish allowed the Gophers to get in on the forecheck and force a turnover that quickly turned into them being down by 2 goals again.
  • PENALTY – Stephen Johns for Boarding on Kyle Rau at 6:51   of the 2nd period – Kyle Rau misses the net on a scoring chance and follows the puck around the right corner. As he gets to the right half-wall with the puck, he turns and Stephen Johns body checks him and the official calls boarding!
    • That’s not a good call! Even if its an elbow like Kevin Gorg thinks it is.
      • Gorg thinks the call is an elbow because Johns followed through high extending his arms so it looks like an elbow to him. Johns never touches Rau with his elbow.
      • It was a good physical play and looks rougher than it is because Johns at 6-4 and 233 pounds is a lot bigger player than Rau at 5-8 and 173 pounds.
        • Don’t follow through with your arms high! When you do, a good physical hit can look like a minor penalty to the officials.
  • PENALTY – Kyle Rau for Interference on Stephen Johns at 9:02 of the 2nd period – Notre Dame gets a 2-on-1 with Mario Lucia on the right with the puck & Stephen Johns on his left. Kyle Rau back checks to take away the pass and interferes with Johns and the official gives Rau a 2-minute minor for it.
    • Kevin Gorg says “this is a good penalty” as it takes away a scoring chance. I’m not sure I agree with that completely because he might be able to take away the pass without taking a penalty but he did what he had to do to keep the Irish from getting a good chance to score.
      • There aren’t many “good” penalties. Somebody makes a mistake that results in a scoring chance so even though Rau takes a penalty to take a scoring chance away, someone else made the wrong play to give up the 2-on-1.
  • PENALTY – Tom Serratore for Roughing Cross-Checking on Jeff Costello at 19:48 of the 2nd period – Tom Serratore comes in to finish a check on Jeff Costello and gets his hands up high on him.
    • He did have both hands on his stick so I can see why the official called a cross-check but it looks more like a roughing penalty to me.
    • Keep your hands down when you check!

3rd Period

  • BIG SAVE! – Adam Wilcox on Bryan Rust at 3:20 of the 3rd period – Kevin Lind makes a poke check on Nick Bjugstad that gets past Zach Budish and Bryan Rust gets a breakaway. He makes a move and is bothered by a back checking Nate Schmidt as he does so he doesn’t get a good shot off. Adam Wilcox still had to make a save with the toe of his left skate keeping the score at 3-1!
    • Not sure if the shot would’ve gone wide but it was close.
  • PENALTY – Shayne Taker for Interference on Seth Ambroz at 8:52 of the 3rd period – Off a face-off in the left of the Irish zone (Summerhays left), Seth Ambroz is on the left wing with Shayne Taker opposite him. The face-off is won by T.J. Tynan to the back wall so Ambroz is on the forecheck and Taker ends up knocking him down  with the puck nowhere near them.
  • PENALTY – Michael Voran for Cross-Checking on Ben Marshall at 14:00 of the 3rd period – Michael Voran is going to the net to get open for a pass or a rebound and cross-checks Ben Marshall for no reason and gets to sit in the penalty box because of it.
    • Dumb penalty! Offensive zone! Needless play! ‘Nuff said!
  • GOAL! (Empty-Net) – Zach Budish from Kyle Rau & Nate Condon at 19:45 of the 3rd period – With the goalie pulled, a one-time slap shot by Stephen Johns goes wide left and around the right corner. Nate Condon gets to the puck before Robbie Russo and banks it off the boards to Kyle Rau, who skates it to the blue line, passes it to Zach Budish and Budish puts it in the open net.

FINAL SCORE
Minnesota 4, Notre Dame 1

The Gophers jumped on the Irish early and never looked back as the Irish looked a little sluggish playing their first game in 24 days. It took Notre Dame half a period to get in some kind of flow going but even though they cut the lead to one at 2-1 by the end of the 1st period, they couldn’t get much going on offense to make a comeback against a deep Gopher hockey team.

The Gophers have a quick turnaround when they play Alaska-Anchorage in a 2-game series starting Friday at Mariucci! Both games will be televised. Friday’s game is on the Big Ten Network at 8pm CST and Saturday’s game is on FSN at 7pm CST.

Gopher Hockey Notes – vs Air Force Falcons – 12-29-2012

The Minnesota Gopher Hockey team gets back on the ice tonight with their annual Mariucci Classic Holiday tournament and their first opponent is Air Force Academy Falcons! One of the big story lines will be the family affair between Air Force Head Coach Frank Serratore and his son Tom Serratore, who is having his best season as a Minnesota Gopher in his junior season with 6 goals (3 game-winners), no assists and numerous big hits that are a huge part of his game.

Another big story line will be how the Gopher Hockey team plays coming out of the holiday break. Their last game was way back on December 8th when they gave up a 4-1 lead to Colorado College to end the first half with a tie! That’s three weeks without any game action! That’s a long time! There’s only so much you can do in practice to simulate a game and that only goes so far. I’m sure every player is anxious to get back on the ice and play against someone other than their teammates!

DROP THE CLUTTERPUCK!!!
All comments are from an offensive point of view unless otherwise noted!

1st Period

  • Great interview before the game from Air Force Head Coach Frank Serratore about what he thinks about facing his son for the first time:

“All I can tell you is…like…I hope he gets his first hat trick……and I hope its tomorrow against Boston College!” – Haha!

  • GOAL! – Erik Haula from Jake Parenteau & Sam Warning at 6:58 of the 1st period – The Gophers get a good bounce off a Jake Parenteau shot from the point that goes wide right off Ryan Timar’s stick and bounces off the back boards to the other side of the net. Erik Haula was going to the net from the left corner and just tried to chip the puck to the front of the net and it ends up going off Jason Fabian’s skate and into the net! GOPHERS 1-0!!!
    • Is Erik Haula becoming the Gophers best player? He leads them in scoring and scores just over a point a game!
      • Or is it because team’s are game planning against Nick Bjugstad and not worrying as much about Haula?
    • Is it a good play to tip/deflect the puck wide when you are defending in your own zone?
      • Hard to know if it was done on purpose but Air Force goaltender Jason Torf looked to be ready to catch that shot in his glove and then he didn’t know where it went after it deflected wide. That lead to the net being open as Torf was way to the left side of the net and couldn’t get over in time to cover the net.
    • Usually you’d think deflecting a shot wide would be a good thing. This time it turned out bad as the Gophers got a good bounce off the back boards and Haula happened to be in the right place at the right time.
      • That’d be a good thing to discuss with your team!
      • I’m sure the goalie will tell you what he wants you to do or not to do in that situation!
  • PENALTY – Seth Helgeson for Roughing at 12:04 of the 1st period – Fox Sports Network shows no replay of the penalty so from what I saw Seth Helgeson threw a body check as Air Force exited their own zone and got his hands up high so the official called a roughing penalty on him!
    • Bad penalty as going for that check resulted in a 2-on-1 for the Falcons!
      • Plus, Kyle Rau was already covering that man on the play.
      • Was there a miscommunication between Rau & Helgeson? or no communication at all?
  • Should goalies try to play the puck?
    • How often is it a turnover when a goalie attempts to make a play with the puck?
      • They pass it around the boards….to the other team – TURNOVER!
      • They play it away from the forechecker….to nobody – TURNOVER?
    • Maybe they should just leave the puck for the defense?

2nd Period

  • GOAL! – Ryan Reilly from Christian Isackson & Justin Holl at 5:34 of the 2nd period – Ben Marshall crosses the red line and slaps the puck around the left boards for a hard dump. The puck goes all the way around to the right half-wall where Justin Holl gets to the puck about the same time as Falcon defenseman Alex Halloran and the puck bounces up in the air and neither player knows where it is until it lands on the ice. By that time Jason Fabian has come in to play the puck but Halloran hits it back to him but it goes through his legs. Christian Isackson sees the loose puck and gets to it as it goes down below the goal line. Dan Weissenhofer goes to defend Isackson and that leaves Ryan Reilly open in front of the net for a one-timer that he puts into the upper left corner! GOPHERS 2-0!!!

    • That’s Ryan Reilly’s 1st COLLEGIATE GOAL!
      • Even if Doug McLeod says its his 2nd goal of the season!
      • He may be worse than Anthony LaPanta! That’s saying quite a bit there!
      • I wish I could just mute the announcers and just listen to the game of hockey being played! Is there an app for that? There should be!
    • Dan Weissenhofer leaves the front of the net to pursue the puck but Isackson had a step on him so he should have made sure to block a pass from getting to the front of the net.
      • There’s not much Isackson (or any player for that matter) can do from beneath the goal line so just leave him there until someone else can cover the front of the net.
    • The goalie, Jason Torf, doesn’t do a good job of being ready for the pass.
      • He had his stick pointing out like he would deflect a centering pass but he missed it! Trying for it gave him less time to try to stop the shot.
      • To give the goalie some slack, its difficult to watch the puck and know who’s in front of your net but a goalie’s job is to read the play more than any other player on the ice.
    • Ryan Timar scrambled to get to Ryan Reilly in time but obviously couldn’t get there.
      • There is a fine line between covering a player and being close to a player.
      • Of course, if Weissenhofer gets the puck from Isackson, Timar is ready for the breakout right away.
    • A Game Of Inches!
      • Alex Halloran reaches for the puck at the half-wall but barely misses it allowing Holl to get to it and the puck bounces in the air.
      • The puck is inches away from both Halloran and Fabian and it gets through Fabian’s legs.
      • Isackson gets to the puck inches before Weissenhofer and passes it through his legs….
      • Inches from being deflected by one of his skates and…
      • Torf misses the centering pass by inches with his goalie stick!
  • PENALTY – Erik Haula for Hooking at 19:50 of the 2nd period – Erik Haula accidentally gets his stick in between the legs of Scott Holm slowing him up and the official calls him for hooking.  Tough break but you have to control your stick and don’t put it there.

3rd Period

  • Quinnipiac – Quinn-i-Pee-Ac? or Quin-nip-EE-Ac? I say the latter but Mcleod pronounces it the former! Who’s right?
  • Doug McLeod is talking about what’s on the scoreboard during the intermission!
    • AND he says “that’s why you buy a ticket to a division I college hockey game!”
    • Really? You buy a ticket to see what’s playing on the scoreboard during the intermission? Is that why ticket prices are high?
    • Giving Doug McLeod free time  to talk is a bad idea! Or at least a bad idea to have it broadcasted to the listening public!
  • BIG SAVE! – Adam Wilcox on Stephen Carew at 5:50 of the 3rd period – Trevor Waldoch comes over the left of his own blue line and sees Stephen Carew coming up the right side. He fires a pass through the neutral zone that Nate Condon tries to break up but he only gets a piece of it and it deflects back right into the path Carew was skating in sending him in alone on Adam Wilcox but he waits too long to take a shot on Wilcox so Adam goes down making the save to keep the game at a 2-goal deficit!

    • I’m not sure what Seth Helgeson is doing on that play! He was over near the bench and looked like he would change and then he’s closer to the other side of the ice and center ice and nobody is playing left defense.
      • Mark Alt was already playing on the right D.
    • Looking at the replay, it looks like Helgeson was covering Jason Fabian instead of staying in a good defensive position for where the puck is and could go.
      • Hard to imagine the coaches want him glued to one guy like that, especially in the neutral zone.
      • How can you be prepared defensively if you are skating away from the puck? Especially while some of your teammates are making a line change!
  • PENALTIES – Seth Helgeson for Roughing & Unsportsmanlike Conduct (Spraying the Goalie) & Mike McDonald for Roughing at 6:27 of the 3rd period – Seth Helgeson skates in and takes a shot from the right side that the goalie saves in his glove but he still skates in and sprays him and that sets off the Falcons!
    • Up two goals, why would you want to get a team going by doing that? The Gophers just had a great scoring chance and haven’t really given up that much for chances in on Adam Wilcox. I’m dumbfounded by that sequence by Seth Helgeson!
  • PENALTY – Tony Thomas for Tripping at 11:36 of the 3rd period – Tony Thomas is skating near the Falcons blue line and Erik Haula (?) skates into him and falls down and the official calls Thomas for tripping!
    • WOW! That’s a bad call! It’s called incidental contact! There wasn’t anything that looked like a trip except the fact that someone fell down.
  • GOAL! (POWER PLAY) – Kyle Rau from Erik Haula & Nick Bjugstad at 12:05 of the 3rd period – A loose puck comes to Nick Bjugstad near the top of the left circle. He backs up towards the left half-wall to get more time and space and passes it to Erik Haula at the right point  for what looks like a one-timer but Haula passes it down to Kyle Rau at the right of the net (Jason Torf’s left) for a one-time shot attempt that goes into  Jason Torf’s padding but the puck squeaks out behind him and Rau grabs it and shoots it into the empty net! GOPHERS 3-0!!!
    • Kyle Rau basically missed badly on the one-time attempt or he was trying to pass it because he had a tough angle to shoot from.
      • He had Nick Bjugstad on the backdoor. That must’ve been the play because from where he was aiming the one-timer, it never would’ve hit the net.
    • Jason Fabian was going out to block Haula’s one-timer but it looked like he went out with his head down like he was afraid to get hit with the puck.
      • It probably didn’t affect the play. I just thought it looked strange.
      • Maybe he was off-balance or something. He was crouched down so maybe he thought that was the best way to prepare for blocking the shot.
      • The obvious problem with that is he doesn’t know where the puck is going or if its coming towards him or not so when does he pick his head up and/or come out of the crouch?
      • If you’re going to sell out to block a shot, get down and take up as much space as you can making it difficult to get a low shot by you.
  • GOAL! – Nate Condon from Nick Bjugstad at 15:03 of the 3rd period – A shot from Mike McDonald goes wide left and wraps around the left corner to the left half-wall. Nick Bjugstad gets to the puck before pinching defenseman Trevor Waldoch and he chips the puck by him down the right boards to a speedy Nate Condon who comes in the right of the Falcon zone, cuts to the middle, shields the puck away from the defender and shoot back against the grain high to the upper right corner where Jason Torf gets his glove on it but the puck comes out of his gloves and trickles over the goal line! GOPHERS 4-0!!!
    • Down three goals, its hard to argue with pinching in late in the 3rd period and Waldoch had a forward coming back to cover for him and Mike McDonald was back to play defense on the play.
    • Speed kills! Nate Condon made it difficult for the defender because he has to try to keep Condon from getting by him on the outside and from cutting in front of him. Its hard to take away both!
      • Not sure if he had the angle or enough time to take the body but that would’ve been the ideal defense there with only Condon in on the rush and a back checking forward coming!
      • Condon had the option of shooting right away coming down the right side but decided to make the goalie move and go back against the grain!
  • PENALTY – Ryan Timar for Slashing on Adam Wilcox at 17:48 of the 3rd period – Even though FSN shows Scott Holm with a whack on the stick of Sam Warning, after looking at the play, I’d say the call was made when Ryan Timar took a pretty good whack at the stick of Adam Wilcox when he went behind the net to play the puck around the boards for the break out of the zone.

FINAL SCORE
Minnesota 4, Air Force 0

The Gophers showed they were the better team tonight. They had good jump from the start of the game and never really looked back once they got the lead. Adam Wilcox, despite a couple miscues from his defense, was able to preserve another shutout and lower his league leading goals against average.

Tomorrow night’s matchup is a much tougher test as they will battle the #1 ranked team in the nation in the Boston College Eagles at 7pm again at Mariucci Arena and again on FSN!

Gopher Hockey Notes – at Colorado College Tigers – 12-8-2012

The Gopher Hockey team will finish up the 1st half of the season tonight with a rematch with the Tigers of Colorado College after winning last night 4-2! There will surely be some adjustments on both sides with line-ups, lines and schemes. The 2nd game is usually a tougher match-up especially after a win as the Tigers will probably come out with a ton of energy. Should be interesting as most WCHA conference games are!

One line-up change but more changes to lines and defensive pairings. Brady Skjei is back in the line-up after being scratched last night and he will be paired with Seth Helgeson. Travis Boyd gets the unenviable spot as the 4th line center between two (yes…TWO) defenseman although I will say Justin Holl has played well at forward when he’s been asked to do so. Mike Reilly at forward is somewhat of a surprise but maybe AJ Michaelson got hurt and The Don isn’t comfortable putting someone in the line-up that hasn’t played in awhile. Other than that, Christian Isackson moves back up to the 1st line with Kyle Rau & Nick Bjugstad and Nate Condon goes back to the 3rd line centering the Serratore and Seth Ambroz!

For the Tigers, they are making the switch to Josh Thorimbert in goal and also are inserting #18 Scott Wamsganz into the lineup as the Left Wing on line #3 in place of #11 Hunter Fejes and defenseman #3 Michael King onto the last defensive pairing with Ian Young. That moves Joe Marciano up to the 2nd pairing with Eamonn McDermott so a couple of changes for the Tigers to see if they can improve on last night’s effort.

Let’s DROP THE CLUTTERPUCK!!!

1st Period
* GOAL! – Tom Serratore from Nate Condon & Seth Ambroz at 4:39 of the 1st period – A face-off in the Tigers zone is actually won to the right corner by the Tigers. Joe Marciano gets to the puck first, closely followed by a forechecking Tom Serratore, so he turns up the right boards and tries to play it up to Rylan Schwartz. Nate Condon intercepts the pass or loose puck and plays it back into the right corner to Serratore. The Gophers get a cycle going below the Tigers goal line, losing the puck a few times but keeping the forecheck active to get the puck right back. Ian Young tries to wrap the puck around the right boards from behind the net but Nate Condon gets there before Schwartz, takes the puck back below the goal line in the right corner, makes a move around Marciano, is stick checked by Schwartz but gets the puck past Alexander Krushelnyski and makes a backhand pass to Tom Serratore just inside the right face-off circle for a one-time snap shot that goes to Josh Thorimbert’s right side off his blocker, up & over his head and slowly trickles into the right side of the net for the goal! GOPHERS 1-0!!!
* Crazy play but it all happened because of the aggressive forecheck and the cycling of the puck.
* After looking at the replay, Serratore had the shot go off the toe of his stick blade and the puck hits Ian Young in front of the goal then goes up and over Thorimbert, lands in the blue paint and slowly goes across the goal line.
* Yet again, the defense is puck-watching and not finding a man to cover so they don’t get a good shot.
* There has to be a way to practice that! Can you practice not panicking and having the calmness to realize who you’re supposed to cover during a broken play?
* When Nate Condon gets past Krushelnyski, they both swiped at the puck and missed allowing Condon to get the puck and make the pass to Serratore, who nobody was watching.
* You can’t just be watching your man either! Get your stick under his stick so he can’t get the shot off.
* This also means cross-checking them isn’t a good idea because the man can still get his stick on the puck to put it in the net.
* There’s really never a good time to cross-check a guy. That’s probably why it’s a penalty!
* PENALTY – Michael King for Tripping on Justin Holl at of the 1st period – Justin Holl was going to the net from the left corner and was hauled down (or is that Holled down?) by Michael King drawing the penalty call from the official.
* GOAL! (POWER PLAY) – Kyle Rau from Nate Schmidt & Zach Budish Erik Haula from Kyle Rau & Nate Schmidt at 5:14 of the 1st period – Six seconds into the power play and Kyle Rau scores! A face-off to Josh Thorimbert’s right is won by Erik Haula over to Zach Budish at the left half-wall. Budish fights off a stick check and passes the puck to Nate Schmidt at the center of the blue line. Schmidt fakes a slap shot getting Jeff Collett to go down for the block and then he passes to Kyle Rau, who’s skating back towards the right face-off dot. Rau waits for Mike Boivin to get in front of him and for Erik Haula to get close to Thorimbert and shoots the puck to the low left corner that Thorimbert might not have seen. GOPHERS 2-0!!!
* UPDATE – The ‘Puck (ClutterPUCK?) must’ve tipped off of Erik Haula as they announced a change to the goal at the beginning of the 3rd period!
* Schmidt having a great slap shot and faking that shot gets Collett to go down for the block which opens up Rau and takes Collett out of the play.
* Rau waited for Haula to get to the net probably more for a tip than for the screen because, since the shot went in front of Haula and to the left of the goalie, there’s no way Haula had a screen on the goalie, even if Kevin Gorg says he waited for the screen!
* Mike Boivin may have screened his goaltender when he comes out to defend Rau but doesn’t block the shot from going through.
* Rau waited for an opportunity to shoot the puck and surprise the goalie early in the power play!
* Mike Reilly fakes a shot at the blue line then attempts a move around the oncoming forward that doesn’t work giving Michael Morin a partial breakaway that Reilly gets back on to disrupt Morin’s chance.
* You have to be Mr. NoDangles at the offensive blue line or you’ll give up a lot of breakaways and start to see less ice time!
* PENALTIES – Seth Helgeson & ? for Roughing at 12:21 of the 1st period – Some after the whistle pushing gets the gate for one on each side and some 4-on-4 hockey!
* GOAL! – Seth Ambroz from Nate Schmidt & Travis Boyd at 14:33 of the 1st period – The Gophers set up a play off the face-off and it worked to perfection! The face-off is at the right face-off dot (Josh Thorimbert’s left) with Travis Boyd at center, Tom Serratore at right wing, Seth Ambroz at left wing, Nate Schmidt at right defense and Jake Parenteau at left defense. Travis Boyd wins the face-off clean back to Nate Schmidt. He immediately skates the puck to the right half-wall, Seth Ambroz moves from his left wing position back to right defense. Tom Serratore and Travis Boyd drive to the net, taking the guys covering them with them causing a screen of Josh Thorimbert with about 5 players between Seth Ambroz and the goaltender! Michael Morin followed Ambroz but had to skate to Schmidt on the half-wall since Joe Marciano stayed with Tom Serratore as he went to the net. As soon as Nate Schmidt gets to the right half-wall, he passes the puck back to a now wide open Seth Ambroz for a one-timed low snap shot that goes to the right of the outstretched right pad of Thorimbert! GOPHERS 3-0!!!
* Amazing how the puck finds its way through all of those bodies and sticks and skates but that’s why you shoot it low from the point.
* Its incredibly hard to save the puck if you can’t see it!
* PENALTY – William Rapuzzi for Roughing on Seth Ambroz at 19:23 of the 1st period – Rapuzzi was taken down by Seth Ambroz and retaliated with a shove to the face and the official gets him for roughing!

2nd Period
* BIG SAVE! – Adam Wilcox on Jeff Collett at :14 of the 2nd period – Nate Schmidt tries to make a move around Jeff Collett at his own blue line and Jeff Collett steals the puck from him, goes in all alone on Adam Wilcox but Wilcox waits him out and makes the save on the move to the forehand.
* PENALTY – Seth Ambroz for Holding on Eamonn McDermott at 1:33 of the 2nd period – Right after the Gopher power play ends Seth Ambroz is forechecking and grabs a hold of Eamonn McDermott and takes him down and gets 2 minutes for it!
* Not a good penalty in the offensive zone!
* PENALTY – Rylan Schwartz for Slashing on Adam Wilcox/Nate Schmidt at 5:59 of the 2nd period – Some after the whistle activity results in a power play for the Gophers!
* PENALTY – Erik Haula for Tripping on Archie Skalbeck at 8:09 of the 2nd period – Erik Haula is defending Archie Skalbeck in the right corner and keeps chopping at the puck even though Skalbeck’s feet are between his stick and the puck so he ends up tripping him and getting some time in the penalty box to think about it.
* Don’t slash at the puck and the player’s feet! Keep skating and get better position! Especially when the player is in the corner beneath the goal line!
* GOAL! (POWER PLAY) – Rylan Schwartz from Eamonn McDermott & Scott Winkler at 8:30 of the 2nd period – It took all of 21 seconds  for the Tigers to score on the power play. William Rapuzzi wins a battle for the puck over Nate Schmidt in the left corner, passes it to Scott Winkler on the left boards and heads to the front of the net. Winkler passes the puck to Rylan Schwartz as he’s skating back towards the right of the zone. Schwartz makes a short pass to Eamonn McDermott at the center of the blue line and gets over to the right slot. McDermott fakes a slap shot getting Tom Serratore to go down for the block allowing Schwartz to skate to the right face-off dot with nobody on him. McDermott gets him the puck and Rylan Schwartz has the time to pick his spot with a snap shot that goes upper right corner over the glove of Adam Wilcox. TIGERS 1-3!!!
* I know Tom Serratore doesn’t want to let the shot from the point get off but I’m sure Adam Wilcox would rather try to stop a shot from the point than a shot from a goal-scorer like Rylan Schwartz.
* You have to know the personnel on the ice and make sure the opponent’s best player isn’t allowed to get that shot off!
* PENALTY – Jeff Collett for Tripping on Sam Warning at 10:59 of the 2nd period – Jeff Collett is forechecking hard and tries lifting the stick of Sam Warning and ends up taking his feet out from underneath him. TWOOO MINUTES!
* Brady Skjei, going back to get the puck in his own zone, goes behind his own net and tries to skate it up the right side but lost track of the forechecking forward who didn’t follow him behind the net but instead cut in front of Adam Wilcox and caused a turnover that gave the Tigers a good scoring chance.
* Brady looks like he’s trying to do too much every time he gets the puck.
* Just make the simple pass and the simple play! THAT will get you on the ice more!
* GOAL! – Mike Reilly from Travis Boyd at 15:41 of the 2nd period – Michael King tries to make something out of nothing by skating the puck into the Gopher zone but he turns the puck over when Travis Boyd catches him from behind and backhands the puck back up the left side of the ice giving Mike Reilly and Justin Holl a 2-on-1 break. Justin Holl drives the net like he should and Mike Reilly keeps skating the puck in until he has no choice but to shoot and he snaps a shot to the upper right corner over Josh Thorimbert’s glove. GOPHERS 4-1!!!
* Mike Boivin actually played the 2-on-1 pretty well by taking away the pass and at the last second coming over to try to block the shot.
* Thorimbert appears to go down early and the Gophers may have had a scouting report on him for that because Mike Reilly went upper right over his glove.
* Two defenseman playing forward end up getting a 2-on-1 and make it work! You won’t see that very often…unless, of course, they happen to be playing forward a lot!
* Reilly knows how to shoot! There’s no doubt about that!
* Michael King needs to send that puck in deep instead of trying to make something happen there!
* Not sure if he’s trying to prove something to his teammates and his coaches by trying to make a play but he did prove something by making the wrong play and he might be sitting for the next game!
* After he turned the puck over he makes a line change which is another bad decision.
* Not good to change on the back check!
* PENALTY – Christian Isackson for Hooking on William Rapuzzi at 15:53 of the 2nd period – Off a face-off in the Tiger zone won by the Gophers, William Rapuzzi is getting out to the point and Christian Isackson gets his stick in to hold him up and get two minutes in the box!
* PENALTY – Mike Boivin for Roughing on Kyle Rau at 16:16 of the 2nd period – Kyle Rau got under the skin of Mike Boivin and Boivin saw a chance to hit him and took it. Unfortunately, he was a little excessive getting his gloves up high on Rau when making the hit!
* Michael King is showing why he was scratched for last night’s game. A bouncing puck is coming towards him at the Gopher blue line and he makes a lazy kicking attempt to keep it in the zone and he misses it completely sending  Nick Bjugstad and Nate Condon on a 2-on-1 that probably should’ve scored but Nick Bjugstad ended up hitting METALLURGY on the quick return pass from Condon!

3rd Period
* Up 4-1, how hard is it to keep playing hard when you’re up by 3 goals?
* It shouldn’t even be a question but teams always let up a bit when they get up big and that’s what always gets the other team back in the game!
* They concentrate on getting it deep and playing the right way but isn’t it better to keep playing the way that got you the 3-goal lead to begin with?
* PENALTY – Cody Bradley for High-Sticking on Justin Holl at 2:32 of the 3rd period – Justin Holl gets the puck and Cody Bradley was just turning the way the puck went and ended up getting his stick up high on Holl and gets two minutes for it!
* Someone tell Doug McLeod that its the NATIONAL Collegiate Hockey Conference NOT the NORTHERN Collegiate Hockey Conference!!! Lord, is that really that difficult to figure out?
* Or Just MUTE HIM!!!
* GOAL! (SHORT-HANDED) – Alexander Krushelnyski from Rylan Schwartz at 4:17 of the 3rd period – A rare mistake by Gopher defenseman Ben Marshall gives the Tigers a 2-on-1 while short-handed! Ben Marshall doesn’t get all of a one-timer and instead of playing defense he aggressively pursues the puck and Alexander Krushelnyski just tips it past him to Rylan Schwartz and Schwartz tips it right back up to him and goes for a line change while Krushelnyski takes it up the left side with Mike Boivin coming up the right. Mike Reilly takes the pass away leaving Adam Wilcox to take the shooter. Krushelnyski takes a snap shot that beats Wilcox over his glove to the upper right corner! TIGERS 2-4!!!
* That’s a huge goal while killing a penalty!
* I always say take the pass away on the 2-on-1 and Mike Reilly did that but he kind of took himself out of the play making it a breakaway for Krushelnyski!
* He could go down and swing his stick at the puck to at least make the shooter adjust before he shoots.
* You could say that with a defenseman as the other man on the 2-on-1, force the puck holder to do something with it before he gets that close but its easy to second guess that.
* Rylan Schwartz wasn’t even on the ice when the goal was scored as he went for a change while on the penalty kill! he did get an assist though!
* GOAL! – Alexander Krushelnyski from Mike Boivin & William Rapuzzi at 6:05 of the 3rd period – The Gophers clear their zone but a loose puck gets them thinking offensively and out of position when the puck goes the other way at the Tigers blue line. When Zach Budish reaches for the puck instead of taking the extra stride, he allows William Rapuzzi to win the puck and turn up the right boards and give a pass to Mike Boivin coming up the center of the neutral zone. Boivin goes around a reaching Erik Haula, who went for the puck instead of the man and missed, and skates the puck into the left of the Gopher zone. Seth Helgeson was mirroring Alexander Krushelnyski but Krushelnyski turned at the blue line to stay onside putting Helgeson on defending the puck carrier and Brady Skjei on the two oncoming forwards but giving too much gap to the offense. Boivin has the time to shoot the puck low to get a rebound off Adam Wilcox that bounces back up the middle to Krushelnyski for a quick shot into the upper left corner and all of a sudden its a one-goal game! TIGERS 3-4!!!
* Both Gopher defenseman needed to gap up on that play! Gap up meaning close the gap between you and the offensive player giving them less time and space.
* Brady Skjei doesn’t know where the puck is and is trying to cover two guys as they come in for the rebound! He got neither!
* Is their a better way to play that?
* Know where the puck is and once you see the offensive player shoot, turn, find the puck and clear the front of the net!
* You can’t cover two guys so choose one and make sure he doesn’t get to the puck!
* Up the middle is the more dangerous spot for the rebound so that would be the better place to cover but its more difficult when you’re skating backwards!
* Adam Wilcox needs to control that shot and not give up a rebound there!
* People say how can a team play so good for two periods and then play so bad!
* A couple mistakes can turn into goals really quick! The Gophers had a chance to go up 4 goals on a shot that hits the post and got a power play so they were playing good and just made a couple bad decisions that the Tigers capitalized on.
* I’m not sure why Helgeson is skating with Krushelnyski in the neutral zone meaning he probably doesn’t need to mirror the way he’s skating. Skate with him and keep an eye on him.
* PENALTY – Christian Isackson for Boarding on Eamonn McDermott at 9:00 of the 3rd period – Christian Isackson on the forecheck makes a body check on Eamonn McDermott and he goes into the boards awkwardly looking like a boarding penalty but he hits him from the side so its a somewhat questionable call.
* Isackson was probably a little over physical and at that point, he could’ve taken the puck instead of the man.
* A penalty in the offensive zone is a bad penalty 99.9% of the time!
* BIG SAVE! – Adam Wilcox at 18:37 of the 3rd period – A crazy play where Adam Wilcox lost his stick and the puck was bouncing around in the crease ends up under Ben Marshall.
* GOAL! (EXTRA MAN) – Rylan Schwartz from Alexander Krushelnyski at 19:36 of the 3rd period – Alexander Krushelnyski is on the left half-wall and wraps the puck around the back of the net. Rylan Schwartz gets to the puck and wraps it right back around the left corner then goes to the backdoor spot at the right of the net (Adam Wilcox’ left). When Krushelnyski gets the puck on the left half-wall he makes a pass to Schwartz for the backdoor one-timer into a mostly empty net for a TIE GAME AT 4!!!
* How can the backdoor man not be covered especially when that man is RYLAN SCHWARTZ?
* Your Schwartz is bigger than mine!
* What a pass by Krushelnyski! That has to be something they’ve worked on or set up during the timeout!

Overtime
* FREE HOCKEY!!!
* So far, this overtime period is being played like neither team wants to lose rather than trying to win!
* Crazy end to the overtime as Jake Parenteau got a shot from the left point and missed the net!

FINAL SCORE
Minnesota 4, Colorado College 4

Some fans might say the Gophers didn’t play that well after they got a 3-goal lead at either 3-0 or 4-1 but Colorado College capitalized on a couple of mistakes by the Gophers including a rare mistake by Ben Marshall to get within a goal and then got a clutch goal from Rylan Schwartz to tie the game with under 30 seconds left. Not a great way to go into the holiday break as they don’t get the chance to get out and play again until December 29th when the Gopher Hockey team hosts the Air Force Academy in the first game of the Mariucci Classic!

Maybe it’s a good thing for them to go into the Holiday break knowing they let one slip away! That gives them a chance to work hard to fix some of the problems they’ve had on defense so far this season and for a couple guys to get a shot at playing for their country in the 2013 World Junior Championship that start on December 26th in Russia! All USA Hockey games will be broadcast on NHL Network including a couple pre-tournament games on Thursday, December 20th at 11:30pm against Sweden and on Saturday, December 22nd at 5am against Finland!
