Minnesota Wild Recap at the Pittsburgh Penguins - October 29th, 2024

The Minnesota Wild ended their 7-game road trip with a game in Pittsburgh against the Penguins. The Pittsburgh Penguins just finished a 4-game road trip through Canada and they lost all 4 games. They had lost 5 in a row overall. Did the Wild make it 6 in a row?

This game was the Minnesota Wild against the Pittsburgh Penguins but the spotlight was shining very brightly on Wild & former Penguins G Marc-André Fleury since Pittsburgh is where he began his NHL career 21 years ago after he was selected with the #1 overall pick in the 2003 NHL Draft by the Penguins and this was very likely the last time he would play in Pittsburgh.*
*Unless… somehow the Minnesota Wild & Pittsburgh Penguins meet in The Stanley Cup Finals! Unlikely? Yes. Possible. Yes.

He helped them win 3 Stanley Cups over 13 seasons but G Matt Murray had taken over the #1 goalie role in Pittsburgh so Marc-André Fleury was exposed in the expansion draft for the Vegas Golden Knights to select. That was largely due to his $5.75M Salary/Cap Hit which is a lot for a backup goalie.* This showed what kind of player Marc-André Fleury was because he came within 2 wins of winning the Stanley Cup (3 in a row) but Vegas lost to the Washington Capitals and some Ovechkin guy.

That season, he finished 5th in voting for the Vezina Trophy for the League’s Best Goalie. His numbers were better or equal to the winner but he played fewer games. He won the Vezina 4 seasons later along with the Jennings Trophy.

That’s on the ice! Off the ice, he’s known as a great teammate and maybe the greatest prankster in the league over his 21 seasons. Ask Brandon Duhaime or just look for the videos celebrating his final game in Pittsburgh.

Alright. Enough words. Let’s…

Minnesota Wild Recap at the Philadelphia Flyers – October 26th, 2024

Minnesota Wild Recap at the Philadelphia Flyers - October 26th, 2024

The Minnesota Wild face a test in their game against the Philadelphia Flyers. A tough test? Yes… because Philly is the 2nd worst teams (by record) in the National Hockey League right now so the test is if the Wild can stick to their game and not play down to their opponent. In the NHL, any team can beat any other team at any time. Hopefully, the Wild will keep playing as well as they have been playing as they look to extend their winning streak to 5 in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Flyers Lineup vs the Minnesota Wild - October 26th, 2024

Game Recap

1st Period

The Minnesota Wild struggled defensively in the opening minutes. The two wings were too deep in the zone. That allowed Philly to get the puck back & across to the right point for a shot. Wild G Filip Gustavsson made the save but he didn’t control it well. Philly F Sean Couturier pounced on the juicy rebound to give the Flyers an early 1-goal lead.

18:42 – Goal – Philadelphia – Sean Couturier (1) from (1) & (2)

Does Kirill Kaprizov hinder Gustavsson’s view of the shot in his attempt to block the shot? Does it deflect off of him? It’s hard to tell. On the replay, it doesn’t look like Kaprizov affected the shot or Gustavsson’s ability to see it. He didn’t control the puck very well and made the save in the middle of his pads so he should’ve been able to absorb it into his pads and freeze it.

Minnesota Wild 0 | 1 Philadelphia Flyers

2:33 later, the Wild thought they forced a turnover in the neutral zone but the puck went right to Flyers rookie F Matvei Michkov. He easily skated with the puck into the offensive zone and the Wild failed to pick up D Nick Seeler trailing the play so he had a point blank shot and he fired it past Gustavsson and under 5 minutes into the game the Wild trailed by 2 goals.

16:09 – Goal – Philadelphia – Nick Seeler (1) from (3) & (5)

Minnesota Wild 0 | 2 Philadelphia Flyers

2nd Period

There was an early tripping penalty in the neutral zone from Philadelphia Flyers F Scott Laughton that put the Minnesota Wild on the Power Play. During the power play, another penalty was called when Garnet Hathaway hit Wild F Joel Eriksson Ek in the face with a forearm that certainly looks like a dirty play.

5:06 – Goal – Minnesota – Brock Faber (1) from Kirill Kaprizov (10) & Joel Eriksson Ek (2)

Minnesota Wild 1 | 2 Philadelphia Flyers

4:33 – Goal – Minnesota – Marcus Foligno (1) from Declan Chisholm (1)

Minnesota Wild 4 | 5 Philadelphia Flyers

6:32 – Goal – Minnesota – Jake Middleton (2) Unassisted

Minnesota Wild 5 | 5 Philadelphia Flyers

2:24 – Goal – Philadelphia – Rasmus Ristolainen (1) from Sean Couturier (3) & Travis Konecny (5)

Minnesota Wild 5 | 6 Philadelphia Flyers

This the best view of the whole play. In a 1-goal game, how does an official just call Mats Zuccarello here?

1:00 – Goal – ENG – Philadelphia – Sean Couturier (3) from Noah Cates (1) & Travis Sanheim (1)

Minnesota Wild 5 | 7 Philadelphia Flyers

The Wild responded and had a chance to win but they should learn from having a bad start (1st early game this season) and learn that every team will bring their best against a team that’s rolling.

Minnesota Wild Recap at the Tampa Bay Lightning - October 24th, 2024

The Minnesota Wild made the quick trip up to Tampa Bay to play the Tampa Bay Lightning who are 4-2-0 to begin this season. They’re scoring 4.33 goals per game but they are also giving up 3.33 goals per game but that includes allowing 5 goals in each of their last 3 games (all road games (5-4 Loss at Ottawa; 5-2 Loss at Toronto & an 8-5 win at New Jersey)).

Minnesota Wild Game Notes at the Tampa Bay Lightning - Octover 24th, 2024

Game Recap

1st Period

A great rush and play through the neutral zone put the Wild on the board 6:23 into the game. The quick move from Wild F Kirill Kaprizov to get open for the one-timer was key to the goal. So was puck-watching from the Lightning.

Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper challenged the play for being off-side

… but it failed because Marco Rossi had control & possession of the puck as he took it into the offensive zone.

13:37 – Goal – Minnesota – Kirill Kaprizov (3) from Marco Rossi (4) & Jonas Brodin (4)

Minnesota Wild 1 | 0 Tampa Bay Lightning

The Wild were outshot 12-5 by Tampa Bay but still led 1-0 after the first 20 minutes.

2nd Period

On a Minnesota Wild Power Play, a turnover in the offensive zone somehow turns into a short-handed goal because the Wild didn’t aggressively shut down the play. Instead, they played it very nonchalantly and tried to get the puck instead of playing the body and ending the play.

11:05 – Goal – SHG – Tampa Bay – Brandon Hagel (6) from Anthony Cirelli (8) & Erik Cernak (3)

This has to be very frustrating for coaches. It’s the NHL!!! A play can develop out of nothing so don’t be nonchalant with the puck and on defense while on the power play because it took just 11 seconds for that play to change the game.

Minnesota Wild 1 | 1 Tampa Bay Lightning

2:30 later, Tampa Bay had the puck in the offensive zone and the Wild looked to have things sorted out well but the puck was close to the blue line on Tampa Bay F Nick Paul’s stick. Wild F Kirill Kaprizov went to defend him but Paul moved the puck before Kirill got to him. Then Kirill skated out of the zone to give Tampa a 5-on-4 advantage and they moved the puck and eventually found Tampa Bay legend Nikita Kucherov open for a one-timer. He put the Minnesota Wild behind in regulation for the first time this season.

8:29 – Goal – Tampa Bay – Nikita Kucherov (8) from Nick Paul (5) & Nick Perbix (3)

If Kirill takes the body on Nick Paul instead of just going for the puck, he takes him out of the play or maybe delays the play enough for him to get back to defend. This is why checking is such a huge part of the game &/or why just playing solid defense instead of going for the puck is a better way to play.

Minnesota Wild 1 | 2 Tampa Bay Lightning

The Minnesota Wild have responded well to being scored on so far this season and we saw how they responded to trailing in a game. They did that well too.

Wild D Jonas Brodin does a masterful job of keeping the puck in the zone with his speed, hands and his ability to escape. He then passed it down to Wild F Marcus Johansson and Tampa Bay started watching the puck and because of that, Wild F Joel Eriksson Ek ended up in front of the net with nobody covering him. Watch how Tampa Bay D Erik Cernak (#81), F Michael Eysimmont (#23) chase the puck and how D Ryan McDonagh (#27) leaves Ek to defend Wild D Zach Bogosian and Bogo finds Ek in front of the net to tie the game at 2!

1:38 – Goal – Minnesota – Joel Eriksson Ek (3) from Zach Bogosian (1) & Matt Boldy (6)

Defense is hard, especially at the highest level of hockey but teams & players seem to default to chasing the puck instead of reading the play because they don’t have time to think. This allows their brain to confuse them by telling them they better go to the puck. How do you fix that? If anyone knew, it wouldn’t be such a problem.

Minnesota Wild 2 | 2 Tampa Bay Lightning

The Wild were only outshot 9-8 in that period and were down 21-13 in total shots. On to the…

3rd Period

The Wild & F Joel Eriksson Ek drew a high-sticking penalty from Tampa Bay F Nick Paul in front of the net after a play was whistled down due to a hand pass and neither team wanted to play the puck. The official put the faceoff in the Tampa zone. Wild TV analyst Ryan Carter questioned if the face-off should’ve been in Tampa Bay’s zone due to the play being blown dead from a hand-pass from the Minnesota Wild so we looked it up and the rule is…

From the 2024-25 NHL Rulebook - Rule 72.2 - Hand Pass
From the 2024-25 NHL Rulebook – Rule 72.2 – Hand Pass

The Minnesota Wild adjusted on their power play because Tampa Bay was being very aggressive so they started moving the puck quicker and this gave them more time to set things up but Tampa also resorted to watching the puck again. Becuase of that, Matt Boldy got open and the passing lane was clear to him but Wild F Mats Zuccarello still had to make an amazing pass over to him for a one-timer and the Minnesota Wild regained their 1-goal lead!

19:06 – Goal – PPG – Minnesota – Matt Boldy (4) from Mats Zuccarello (4) & Kirill Kaprizov (9)

Minnesota Wild 3 | 2 Tampa Bay Lightning

The Wild had to protect that lead and did so very well as they limited Tampa to just 5 shots. In the last minute, they won a battle in the defensive zone and the puck squeaked up the right boards to Jakub Lauko and he just chipped it to center ice because he saw Kirill Kaprizov was going to be able to get to it and seal another WILD VICTORY!!!

Minnesota Wild Recap at the Florida Panthers – October 22nd, 2024

Minnesota Wild Recap at the Florida Panthers - October 22nd, 2024

The Minnesota Wild players told the pilot, “Take me to FLORIDA!!!” because they had to play the Florida Panthers last night. The Wild did not “pay for timeshare down in Destin,” though. Going to FLORIDA is now “one hell of a drug” since the Florida Panthers won the Stanley Cup last season.*
*so… Cup me up, Florida? Ooh… Puck me Cup, Florida!? Huh? Thoughts? No? Ok. Nevermind! This is me trying! I didn’t know if you’d care if puck came back.

The Panthers have started this season similar to last season. In fact, if when the Wild beat them, that will make the Panthers record exactly the same as they had last season through 8 games, 4-3-1. The Wild still haven’t trailed in a game this season so let’s see if they kept that going.

Minnesota Wild Lineup at the Florida Panthers - October 22nd, 2024
Florida Panthers Lineup vs the Minnesota Wild - October 22nd, 2024

Game Recap

1st Period

The Minnesota Wild had to weather a Florida storm on the ice as they had a somewhat rough first 5 minutes of the game but they got through it unscathed and found their game pretty quickly.

11+ minutes in, the Wild found themselves in the offensive zone and Mats Zuccarello got a shot off from the top of the slot. Florida G Sergei Bobrovsky made the save & deflected the puck into the corner. Wild D Jake Middleton got to the puck in the left corner & sent it around to Kirill Kaprizov on the other side of the ice. Wild F Marco Rossi got position in front of the net and he put the blade of his stick out as a target for Kaprizov to aim at for a tip and it worked like a charm to put the Wild up 1-0.

8:20 – GOAL – Minnesota – Marco Rossi (3) from Kirill Kaprizov (7) & Jake Middleton (1)

Minnesota Wild 1 | 0 Florida Panthers

22 seconds later, the Minnesota Wild won a faceoff in the defensive zone. Wild D Jonas Brodin chipped the puck off the glass and Florida D Dmitry Kulikov must not have seen it because the puck landed in front of him and he nonchalantly turns to get back in the play. Wild F Matt Boldy is on the loose puck & the other Florida D Niko Mikkola has to move over to defend him but Boldy slowed down to give himself more time & space and then chipped the puck by Mikkola then juked to get past him but he still had to get to the puck and he doesn’t get to it until it’s 2 feet above the goal line but he still has time to survey his options. Wild F Joel Eriksson Ek was in front of the net but Florida F Sam Bennett was covering him. There are two other Florida players backchecking so… oh, hey. Look! Marcus Johansson is wide-open and trailing the play… pass… one-timer… 2-0 WILD!!!

It’s really sad how bad defensive coverage is so far this season and 99 % of it involves staring down the puck. It’s not particularly difficult to figure out how difficult it is to play good defense if you react to the play. That little piece of vulcanized rubber (the puck) moves really fast. It’s also tiny (3″ diameter, 1″ thick) so it’s easy to miss. The average size of an NHL player is 6’2″ & 200 pounds (Google it!) so a lot easier to see and defend but you still have to read the play and react to what you read. Does this mean defending at the highest level of hockey in the world is easy? No! Absolutely not! But it means these players should know better than to keep making the same mistakes over and over again. We’ll have to do a Film Session on this soon!

7:58 – Goal – Minnesota – Marcus Johansson (1) from Matt Boldy (5) & Jonas Brodin (3)

Minnesota Wild 2 | 0 Florida Panthers

The Wild were outshot 9-5 in that period and still led by 2!

2nd Period

Minnesota Wild F Joel Eriksson Ek drew a penalty when Florida Panthers F Sam Bennett took him down in front of the net and the Wild went to work on the Power Play. They eventually got the puck to F Mats Zuccarello at the middle left point for a shot with F Matt Boldy in front of the net and he got his stick on it to deflect in for his 3rd goal of the season.

It’s difficult to defend tipped shots and even more difficult for the goalie to stop them. Then add that it’s on a power play so the defense can’t play man-to-man and the best way to defend against tipped shots is to take a player’s stick away. The next best way is to block the shot. Good Puck to doing that while having one less player on the ice.

17:20 – Goal – PPG – Minnesota – Matt Boldy (3) from Mats Zuccarello (3) & Joel Eriksson Ek (1)

Minnesota Wild 3 | 0 Florida Panthers

About 8:30 later, the Wild forecheck got a little overeager and allowed Florida D Nate Schmidt to escape the pressure and flip the puck up to the offensive blue line where Florida F Matthew Tkachuck made a one-time pass to F Carter Verhaeghe for an odd-man rush. F Sam Bennett moved to the net to be a passing option and Wild D Brock Faber tried to take the pass away but Verhaeghe was able to get around his stick to send the puck to Bennett in front of the net. He was in the process of opening up for the pass which made it difficult to get his stick to it so he moved his right skate to deflect it in to get Florida on the board and the Floridian chapter of Swifties all sang in unison… FLORIDA!!!

8:41 – Goal – FLORIDA!!! – Sam Bennett (5) from Carter Verhaeghe (4) & Matt Tkachuk (3)

The Wild were trying to make a line change which helped Florida get the odd-man rush. Wild D Jon Merrill looked like he was going to cover Bennett then thought the trailing Tkachuk was a bigger threat so he put himself in no-man’s land and took himself out of the play.

Minnesota Wild 3 | 1 Florida Panthers

The Wild responded less than 3 minutes later with movement and passing but it’s also helped or started by Florida chasing the puck. This is how Wild F Kirill Kaprizov gets open to begin with and then you can see all of the Florida players being a second too late as they react to the puck until Mats Zuccarello gets a shot into an open net thanks to the patience of Kirill Kaprizov that made Florida G Sergei Bobrovsky sell out and leave the net gaping.

6:02 – Goal – Minnesota – Mats Zuccarello (4) from Kirill Kaprizov (8) & Jake Middleton (2)

Minnesota Wild 4 | 1 Florida Panthers

The Minnesota Wild added another goal on a Joel Eriksson Ek snipe that took beat Bobrovsky to the upper right corner.

3:55 – Goal – Minnesota – Joel Eriksson Ek (3) from Jake Middleton (3)

Minnesota Wild 5 | 1 Florida Panthers

That’s a Playmaker (3 assists) for Minnesota Wild D Jake Middleton, the first of his career! TARPS OFF EVERYONE…oops… not EVERYONE!!!

Shots were 12-11 in Florida’s favor in the 2nd for a total of 21-16 but the Wild led 5-1.

3rd Period

Florida pulled G Sergei Bobrovsky after the 2nd period. There was still a whole period to go and the Wild knew they would likely have to endure a pretty good push from the Panthers before this game was finished.

They endured the push and still created a bunch of chances for themselves but no goals were scored. They played solid defense and still needed a big save or two from the Gus Bus to get the victory.

Rumors were that after the game, the Florida Panthers were “in the bathroom with a bottle of wine” after this 5-1 loss because the Wild and their goals “had a hell of a time.”

Minnesota Wild Recap at the Columbus Blue Jackets – October 19th, 2024

Minnesota Wild Recap at the Columbus Blue Jackets - October 19th, 2024

The Minnesota Wild continued their 7-game road trip with a rematch of their season opener against the Columbus Blue Jackets. They did have 3 days back home in Minnesota after their win against St. Louis on Tuesday.

The Minnesota Wild got one of their top forwards back in the lineup with Joel Eriksson Ek returning from a broken nose. However, they lost F Ryan Hartman to an upper-body injury (upper-body injury (nose?)) and were still without their captain, D Jared Spurgeon. So F Marat Khusnutdinov moved up to 3rd-line center, Freddy Gaudreau moved to center the 4th line, and Liam Ohgren stayed in the lineup for a third consecutive game.

Game Recap

1st Period

The Minnesota Wild had their forecheck going quickly in this game but Columbus was also struggling with their decision-making and not realizing how much time they had to make a play or where they could go with the puck. The play is made when Wild F Marcus Foligno disrupted a pass with his stick. That created a loose puck and Wild F Yakov Trenin got to it first and quickly sent it to Wild F Marco Rossi who was wide open in front of the net and he buried a shot for his 2nd goal of the season.

MARCOOOOO… GOALOOOOOOO!!!

12:40 – GOAL – Minnesota – Marco Rossi (2) from Yakov Trenin (1) & Marcus Foligno (1)

Minnesota Wild 1 | 0 Columbus Blue Jackets

2nd Period

Almost 5 minutes into the 2nd period, the Minnesota Wild doubled their lead when Wild F Marat Khusnutdinov skated up the right side into the offensive zone then curled at the top of the faceoff circle and found D Jake Middleton trailing the play for a wide-open slapper that Blue Jackets G Daniil Tarasov saved. Still, the puck squeaked through and Middleton was able to get to it first and easily tuck it into the net.

Minnesota Wild 2 | 0 Columbus Blue Jackets

Columbus coach Dean Evason challenged the play for goalie interference and flip a coin because we’ve learned by now that your eyes will make you think it isn’t goalie interference and then it is or vice versa.

NO GOAL!!!

Minnesota Wild 1 | 0 Columbus Blue Jackets

Yep… the mystery continues. Here’s what the NHL said about it:

Coming soon as the NHL website is apparently “503 Service Temporarily Unavailable!” Awesome! This is what we found from Google:

“Explanation: Video review determined that Minnesota’s Jakub Lauko shoved Columbus defenseman Jordan Harris into goaltender Daniil Tarasov, which impeded Tarasov’s ability to play his position in his crease.”

& here’s the rule (Page 101)… again or the part of the rule that is making this goalie interference:

Rule 69: Interference on the Goalkeeper

We also found this 7+ minute video of the Goalie Interference Rule. We haven’t watched it yet because we don’t have a Rage Room currently available to us at this time.

Here’s what the NHL listed as the reason the goal was overturned due to Interference on the Goalkeeper:

Coach's Challenge: MIN @ CBJ - Goaltender Interference in the 2nd period due to Minnesota Wild F Jakub Lauko's "contact" with Columbus Blue Jackets D Jordan Harris that "interfered" with G Daniil Tarasov

Is that even the correct part of the rule? It depends on what the definition of “contact” is in the above portion but the part of the rule we listed is the actual reason because it was due to Jakub Lauko’s contact with Harris that interfered with Tarasov or, at least, that’s what the “video review” result was.

The biggest reason that doesn’t make sense is that the goalie made the save and then fell over thinking he had the puck underneath him but the puck came loose and, “it was just lying there” for Middleton to put it into the net so… did the supposed goaltender interference keep him from playing his position if he was still able to make the save? It’d be nice to have a more in-depth explanation of that part of the ruling and/or the rule.

Wild F Yakov Trenin received a 4-minute double-minor for high-sticking when he missed on his attempt to lift the stick of Columbus F Yegor Chinakhov and hit him in the face and drew blood. The Wild killed it off

So… the Minnesota Wild were outshot 12 to 6 in the 2nd but 9 of those 12 shots were on the power play and 8 of them were during the 4-minute power play. Still, the Minnesota Wild led 19 to 16 in shots and were the better team but were still only up 1 to 0 heading into the…

3rd Period

2:20 into the 3rd period, Columbus took a delay of game penalty then made it a 5-on-3 when Cole Sillinger tripped Matt Boldy and it took just 5 seconds of the 2-man advantage to double their lead on a Kirill Kaprizov one-timer from a crazy angle.

2:52 – GOAL – PPG – Minnesota – Kirill Kaprizov (2) from Brock Faber (3) & Matt Boldy (4)

Was Columbus G Daniil Tarasov not ready for that shot from Kaprizov? He didn’t get over there very fast. He had to peak around a player or two to see where the puck was then saw it was going to Kaprizov and he just didn’t seem to expect a shot because he didn’t look ready to make a save. Is that why former Wild coach Dean Evason reacted the way he did or was it because that’s Kirill Kaprizov and he knows there are not many ways to stop him from scoring, especially on the power play?

Minnesota Wild 2 | 0 Columbus Blue Jackets

5:30 later, Wild F Mats Zuccarello received a pass in the neutral zone from D Jon Merrill and skated into the offensive zone up the left side and dropped it off to Kirill Kaprizov. Columbus D Ivan Provorov stayed with Kirill and the puck so Zuccarello was open on the left and received the puck back from Kaprizov and went in alone on the goalie and beat him under his right arm to put the Wild up 3-0!

8:26 – GOAL – Minnesota – Mats Zuccarello (3) from Kirill Kaprizov (6) & Jon Merrill (1)

Columbus was giving up too big of gaps on defense here and that allowed Kirill all of the time & space he needed to find his buddy. This goal makes the Blue Jackets look really lazy. The forward got back enough then coasted. The left defenseman had no urgency in the 3rd period when they were down 2 goals with under 12 minutes to play.

Minnesota Wild 3 | 0 Columbus Blue Jackets

Wild G Filip Gustafsson may have been thinking shutout once the game got within 2 minutes of ending but Columbus got an offensive rush on a poor line change &/or a poor play F Joel Eriksson Ek not to get the puck deep and Blue Jackets F Yegor Chinakhov took advantage of it and put his team on the board.

18:35 – GOAL – Columbus – Yegor Chinakhov (3) from Sean Monahan (3) & David Jiricek (1)

Minnesota Wild 3 | 1 Columbus Blue Jackets

But it wasn’t enough as the Wild closed out another win and still have yet to trail a game this season. Both losses were in either a shootout or overtime.
